I have a Win2K3 domain. Most clients are XP. I do have a quite a few users in the domain. I dont have a set procedure to follow when users change last names as it doesnt happen often. But it does. So my question is what would a good procedure be.

Specifically, when I have to change the users' last name, what effect will it have on the profile. Will the user get a new profile when she logs on using her new last name as the logon name. I dont use roaming profiles. Should I have to reboot the client to kick in the changes or will a log-out and log-on do?

I understand that Outlook will have to be reconfigured, but what if I am using Xchanage. I know changes from AD will propogate to Xchange, but how long with that take. Also, what if it starts downloading all her emails thinking she is a new user?

Lastly, is she has been a regular sharepoint user, uploaded tons of documents. What will happen to the ownership and also her permissions. Will I have to re-assign everything all over again.

Please advice.
Thanks.

Just renaming the user and changing the log in 'should' have little or no effect on anything else in theory and won't effect the profile as these sorts of thing work off of the user SID not the names, you will need to add a new email address to their account with their new name and set it as the primary address (best to keep the old address there though as they will still receive mail to it for a while).

In my experience however depending on what they do on the network and how many logins they have it's never as simple as it should be, do people really NEED to have there log in details and name changed or are they just being perdantic? It's far easier to leave their log in alone and just add a new email address.

Thanks for the info. So, I guess renaming login username should have no change on the profile.
Do they really need it. I dont know, but they sure want it. Moreever I wanted to hammer some thing into the policy for these kind of things and want to be prepared.
