I am very new to microsoft exchange and my problem is that when I try to add and remove people from the address book (list) I get an error message that says that I cannot make changes to the distribution list. where do I make the changes?

If you are talkign about the GAL (Global Address List)it builds dynamically. There is a property on the user Exchange tabs to allow you to hide a user from the GAL. Beyond that there is no reason to Add someone since it wil happen automatically.

I hope you find this post helpful.

In case you're still not clear - you need to add user's to lists in Active Directory. You can do this either in the properties of the User under the "Member Of" tab, or under the properties of the actual List under the "Members" tab.

If you want a member of a list to NOT be visible under the properties of the List in the GAL - then you need to go to the properties of the User (in AD), open the "Exchange Advanced" tab, and check the "Hide from Exchange address lists" tab - not sure of you asked about that but now you know.
