Norstar Remote Utilities is based on an Access data base.
I work with Access and I have copied the NRU database out to access and added hyperlink columns to access Call Pilots and BCMs, but I cannot get these modified data bases to be recognized by NRU. Nortel will not even give a reply to the request for a change. Does anyone know how to get through the layers of "we don't care" at Nortel and get this simple chang made" We have a mix of over one hundred twenty Norstars and BCMs and even if NRU would not back up the BCM, being able to use one database front end would be a great help.

nru - norstar remote utilities
the bcm has its own bru - backup restore util

the M1 uses a overlay program #43

unless you develop ur own software ...probably nortel is not going to give you the source code.

I know that the BCM has BRU etc. It is just that since NRU is written in Access Dbase and Visual Basic the changes that I am asking for would take a programmer no more than a couple of hours. The Dbase I am using will let me hyperlink to all of the Call Pilots and BCMS. I would just like to see it available in NRU as I can swap between systems ten to twenty times per day and I am required to keep multiple dbases. This is just another example of Nortel giving us what they want, not what we ask for.

Basicly a BCM is a fancy Norstar, so can you put a RAD on a BCM just like you do on a Norstar and access it the same way. (Feature * 9 0)?

why would you want to it has its own utility

ONLY 17 WEEKS TILL SKI SEASON STARTS

Your talking about a programming change. Nortel is looking at the risk/reward basis of your request. One person wants it but it could cause trouble for everyone, if the programming doesn't work as expected. Nortel is operating on the old "it isn't broke, so why fix it?" saying.

The change I am requesting has no risk. If there is a hyperlink column placed in NRU. The use of a hyperlink will only bring up your browser and then you can use all of the other utilities native to the BCM.
I disagree that Nortel is weighing anything, I just do not believe that they are willing to respond because there is no profit to be made.

it is a 'simple change' in a controlled environment ...
your PC /your IE/ your BCM/ your Norstar ...

i'm pretty sure a designer/ developer ...could create a hyperlink in a couple of hours (i can create a link in txt editor in lesser time) ...but when it comes to interoperability thats when QA comes into picture ...then everyone starts bitching about the QA going down at nortel

as systems become more flexible, they become more complex and in come more problems

and you are right about making money ...
they came with centralized vm ...when someone making decisions thought there was money to be made in it
they came with a bcm becasue there was money to be made in it.

Thank you for all of the positive feedback. I have already modified the Dbase that NRU is based on, added a hyperlink column that works, but that still leaves me with needing to go to multiple locations to manage systems and multiple dbases to keep up. NRU will not bring up the modified Dbase. Having a large number of systems it would help to have only one Dbase where I could look up address, password, dial up number, hyperlink etc. I am afraid that the Nortel Police will be after me for using logic.
Thanks everyone,
I will not BITC* and MOAN forever, but this is a great place to hear from people actually using their grey matter.
