I have Mandrake (latest version) i am curious as to how to change the set screen resoultion in KDE at the moment it is too tall. it need to be reinstalled since the root password has been forgotten, but i'd still like to know how to change resolutions I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every moment of it.

Hi,

Actually you probably don't need to reinstall at all (unless you set a password within lilo). To change a lost root password you just boot the system to runlevel 1 only. You do this by bypassing any graphical lilo screen Mandrake may have so that you get the 'boot:' prompt at the bottom of the screen. Then type 'linux 1' so that it looks like :

boot: linux 1

Then press enter and the system will stop at runlevel 1. You just then enter '/sbin/passwd' and set the root password to whatever you like. This is an obvious security weakness because anyone with access to the console can do it - so to protect anyone booting like this you can add a password line to /etc/lilo.conf like this :

password=topSecret

To change the resolution on Mandrake just run the DrakConf utility as root - e.g. type 'DrakConf &' in a console window after having first entered 'su' and the root password. You can also call 'XFdrake' and 'Xdrakres' directly.

Regards

Rgds
