Hi and Happy new Year!

I have to draw a large circle from which small circles bud off. I started doing so by overlapping the large circle with the small circle and using the "merge" command. The big problem now is that the small circle should have a different outline color than the large circle. I tried to cut the path at the two points where the circles originally overlapped, but then I have overlapping open ends which looks very nasty when using thick strokes.

So what would make my life much easier is a possibility to change the outline color of the small circle without changing the color of the large circle, while the two circles are still one connected path! I've been trying for hours now but couldn't come up with a solution.

Your help is highly appretiated!

Thanks very much

If you want to keep one continuous path, you can only have one stroke color (well, you can stack a large number of strokes on top of each other, but they will all follow the entire path.

The one way I can think of to attempt a stroke that's one color part of the path and another for the rest of the path, is to create an art brush, but it would take quite a bit of experimenting to get it to fit right...

Let me throw together a quick image for you.

...do the stroke weights need to be different for the outer circle than the inner circle?

...try using the divide pathfinder option with both circles as different colors, use the direct select tool (white arrow) to remove sections of the overlapping path not required, change to round cap in the stroke palette...

OK, sorry, here's the "quick" image. I got side-tracked.
