Change SQL 2000 TrimTrailingBlanks setting for Selected Fields

Is there an approved method of changing the TrimTrailingBlanks setting on a field by field basis in an existing table? I have a mixture of char and varchar in a table and would like to set all varchar fields to Yes. If there is, does changing the setting automatically truncate the blanks or do I have to do that manually?
