Change Server name & IP to that of an existing Server 1

I have a Windows Server 2003 that has NAT'ing in place to a public IP.

I want to give a new Server 2008 R2 the same name & IP address so the NAT'ing will remain the same.

What is the easiest way to do so?

Demote old server/reset computer account etc?

Is this a DC or just a member server? You mention demoting it which makes it sound like it's a DC.

Member server - by demote I meant unjoin from the domain

No need to remove from the domain (unless you no longer need it at all).

Rename the existing server, give it a new IP address, restart.

Rename new server to the old server's original name, give the new server the IP address that the old server used to be.

That's it.

DNS, assuming you had a static entry for this server, will work as it always has. NAT continues to work as it's just sending traffic to the same IP address.

Thats perfect thanks - I want to keep the old server in the domain for a rollback option if new Server gives errors.
