Situation: A company with a fairly high turnover, used the standard of the company name instead of user name when installing MS Office products ('97, 2000 and XP). With the advent of viruses that send mail using that name as the FROM field (Melissa and her variants) the company wants to reduce employee likelihood of opening infected mail, since employees may think it's from the company.

To do: Use VB script to change the Company name and User name in versions of MS Office ('97, 2000 and XP). Registry entries found okay for 2000 and XP, but '97 is a nightmare! Where is that info stored? Q233499 says to uninstall and re-install. Not a realistic solution. Comments?

Registry entries primarily so it can be scripted and done and over with. It's kinda ugly trying to tell over 6,000 users to do this manually. But I'm not even sure that works... I've changed that on my machine and yet the Help About still shows the original. Wherever this info is stored in '97, it's not changed by that particular menu option.

Hi Grog

You can get at and change the user name programmatically with Application.UserName. I think Dreamboat is right, because it's that user name, not the name to which the software is licensed, that a macro virus will have access. At least, I don't know of any way of accessing the licensee name from code; unless anyone knows different?

Hmmm... maybe I'm all wet about what it is exactly that the virus grabs. I'll give this a shot. Thanks gentlemen!
