Hi,

I have a Partner Messaging system that I’d like to HyperTerminal into but I don’t seem to have the correct set of cables to do so.

I needed to change the default IP address of the system, I read on this forum that I could call into the auto attendant and dial **3 which would give me the admin prompt?

I attempted this by dialing 76 using via hyper terminal, once I conned I dialed **3 from the handset but nothing happened.

If this isn’t possible can anyone suggest the proper cables used to connect to the rs232 port? I’m using a RJ11 to 25pin female, 25pin male to usb port which is active on com6

I rebooted the Messaging system thinking this might reset the port. I also attempted use an older PC to avoid the USB cable but still no connection.

Thank you for any help.

try switching the usb to serial adapter to com 1 or com 2.

Patch cable to 355a or 355af adapter to usb adapter to cpu.

The 355 adapters are 25 pin so sometimes you need to adapt them to 9 pin.

Thank you for the info, I happened to find a 355a but it only has 6 pinouts.... so I’m assuming I need to buy one with 9 and I’ll be set?

thanx for the help!!

Be sure to read my post below the Line for basic information first then the following paragraphs ...

You stated, "I happened to find a 355a but it only has 6 pinouts.... so I’m assuming I need to buy one with 9 and I’ll be set?" That is incorrect. You need to get a serial to parallel connector to plug into a serial port on your computer. Then the 355a plugs into it and then a standard ethernet cable. When it's all connected you say to yourself, "who is the idiot who designed this!"

FYI- most new laptops do not have a serial port anymore. I have an old dell Pentium 2 laptop that I keep around just to do this.

FYI 1 - Last time I saw this dicussion no one had been able to hook the cables up any other way. They were not able to use a USB to serial converter. That was a couple of years ago.

FYI 2 -- At one time there was a discussion about not being able to access a modem on the voicemail. That is you dialed in and tried to access the modem but it wasn't there. I think we came to the conclusion (don't flame me if I'm wrong) that the Port Card may be a bootleg. If my memory serves me right the modem is in the Port card and the bootleg cards don't have the modems. I wouldn't bet on the last statement since I am only repeating someone else from the past.

This is from a post of mine way back....

Did a bunch of testing on a number of ACS's Partner Messaging R1 and R7's. I have found when trying to connect to the RS232 Port to change the IP address, only the 19200 baud rate would work for me on all R7 units. No slower or faster speeds would. However, slower speeds did work on R1 Partner Messagings. So the setting in Hyperterminal did work as stated in the Manual

for my Dell Laptop: Com1
Bit Rate: 19200
Data bit: 8
Par: None
Stop: 1
Flow: none

Remember you do need the serial to parallel connector (which plug into your computers serial Port -2 rows nine pins) followed by the AT&T 355A - followed by a standard Ethernet Cable plugged into the RS232 Port
I hope this help someone...
