change field width of just one field 1

hi. using access '07 and can't seem to figure out something that seems like it should be really easy: in design view I change the width of a field, and all fields are automatically changed to the size of the one I'm changing. This seems like a new thing in Access 2007. Does anyone know how to turn this off or override it? there seems to be a similar thing with "coupling" for lack of a better description between the field and the label. I can't seem to figure out how to delete a label.
