Change Field to a LookUp

I inherited an old DOS database and have been updating it through current versions of Access. Unfortunately, it has many quirks that need to be cleaned up. For example, data entry folks enter state abbreviations (this is not a Look up field)as part of the addresses. As you might imagine, there are a few errors: AR... for Arkansas or Arizona?. If I try to change the field to a look up field, all of the information in the field is nulled/deleted. Is there any way to adda Look Up field, populate it with current entries and not lose what data we have?

It is generally considered a bad idea to use look-up fields (

Add the look-up to a form by using a combobox.
