Change External Domain to Secondary - GW 6.0

Situation: I have inherited a GW 6.0 system with two servers connected to each other via a VPN. They each run 2 POs and an MTA. Each server sees the other's domain as external and indeed they have different names - DomainABC and DomainXYZ. We are all part of the same company and tree.

I would like to change the DomainXYZ to be a secondary to my domain (ABC). Can someone point me to a TID and even give any advice?? I am particularly concerned about potential impact to the users on the external domain that will be converted. All the documents I see talk about separate trees and this is all one tree.
