change eth0 ip address from console

please can someone tell me how i can change the ip address of an interface through the console. I have not used Linux before so i have no idea. Thanks.
 
ifconfig eth0 192.168.0.1

check the man page for ifconfig. you can set broadcast, netmask, most anything you can think of.
