When I use my database...it's usually showing record number one. That's no big deal...except when I think I'm doing a search (control-z) and the (control-z) doesn't register..I input data into the field the cursor is on...blowing away data that is in there. Yes, I know about edit vs. view mode, but you have to be in edit mode to key in a search variable. Soooo...wise guy that I am...I figure..heck, I'll just create a dummy record so it won't matter if I screw it up. Not. It didn't work. P9 still defaults to that same client record...even though record number one is now a dummy record with dummy info in it.

How DO I make p9 default to the dummy record?

What do you mean, "you have to be in edit mode to key in a search variable"? Ctl-Z opens a dialog box, so you should never be in a position to overwrite data in the field. I don't think I understand exactly what might be happening.

All tables open to the first record (top).

Long day. Was zonked when I wrote that. Well...Sometimes I try to hit control z...but when I'm using a form to view a database...and it's in edit mode (f9) the control key may not register....which causes me to type a z into whatever field it's sitting on (usually clientname)...thus, blowing away the field. It usually happens when record number one is onscreen...so I keep zapping it's data. If there's a huge memo...and it gets blown away...that can be a real pain. I have backups..but they can be a pain to get to..and may not be too up to date.

If you immediately (before moving out of the field) press the Esc key, it cancels the record change and restores the data.

If you absolutely need the first field to be a dummy field, make certain your table is keyed and that the value in the first record's key would always be 'first' in an ascii list (blank works especially well).
