Change Date Format in Word 1

I am mail merging data from Excel into a Word document. The date format in Excel is dd/mm/yyyy but when I merge into the Word document it is changing to mm/dd/yyyy. Anyone any ideas on keeping UK format in word document.

Thanks for the tip, but this hasn't solved the problem. All entries in registry were set correctly. The date is showing correctly in Excel i.e. dd/mm/yyyy it is just when I merge with a word document that it changes to mm/dd/yyyy, any more suggestions.
 
I had the same problem and found the answer here:

The problem is that although the format looks ok in excel it actually stores it a certain way (I found this info somewhere else)and you need to tell word how to manipulate it back using the mergefield command when it comes in from excel.
