No, there is no way to change the actual cursor without using a pluging. I remember comet cursor doing the same thing but then people realised it was spyware too so it stopped.
What you can do is change the cursor when someone rolls over a link by using a style sheet.
Thanks, I've changed the cursors for a number of things including A:hover already using stylesheets. There's no way I'm using Comet, it doesn't do what I'm trying to do anyhow. Thanks again for your reply.
You can specify an image to be the cursor using CSS2. I don't believe it works in mozilla/netscape6/7 but could work in IE6Win or IE5Mac ===
