Hi all,

At present we need to change a few computer name in my Windows 2000 domain. I wonder we have two ways to do as follows:

1. Unjoin PC from domain to Workgroup then rejoin these PCs to my domain.
2. We can go to System Properties, -> Network Identification -> change directly PC name from here.

But I'm not sure the difference between two above ways, which is the better? Please give me explanation/comments on advantages/disadvantages? ...

Thanks so much for your assistance.

Actually there is a third and better way to do this.

Use the Resource Kit Utility NETDOM

netdom will allow you to change the machine name remotely, so you won't even have to leave your chair. The big advantage with this is that it is easier to do multiple machines and can in fact be scripted or just added to a batch file if you are not a scripter.

I hope you find this post helpful. Please let me know if it was.

Regards,

Mark

hey markdmac,

I know of a script that will do this, but my question lies in how NETDOM does the name change.

Does the change require an immediate reboot or none at all?

It will not need a reboot as I recall when last I ran it.

I hope you find this post helpful. Please let me know if it was.

Mark

you can get netdom in the support tools

netdom renamecomputer <oldmachinename> /NewName:<newmachinename> /userd:domain\administrator /passwordd:* /usero:domain\administrator /passwordo:* /REBoot:<time in seconds> /force

/force forces teh computer to reboot at teh time specified without prompting, otherwise it will prompt

it does require a reboot

almost got a paragraph there :)

very kewl to Mark and Brandon. And thank you for your post because I've been doing the stupid dis-joining, renaming and then joining the domain again.

And....here's a star for the both of you!

Again, thank you.
