Change Chart of Accounts

I have a client with Peachtree Complete 2003 that has done a short-sighted design of their Chart of Accounts. I know shortly I will have to fix this mess. Can anyone give me some steps to renumber the Chart of Accounts without losing the transaction details? Is their an addin or other software to make this easier?
