Running on RedHat 7 2.2.17-14, I need to move my IDE cdrom from Secondary slave to primary slave. How do I do this? If I do ls -l /dev/cdrom I get
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 3 Feb 15 10:37 /dev/cdrom -> hdd
No, primary and secondar refer to the physical IDE channel that the device is on. What you have to do is open up your computer and switch the big fat grey cable on the cd-rom drive from the primary channel onthe controller board to the secondary channel. This is not hard, and be sure that the red stripe on hte grey cable goes towards the power.

Unfortunately, that's what I did and when I tried to mount the cd, I get the error mount: the kernel does not recognize /dev/cdrom as a block device
(maybe `insmod driver'?)
To bring it down to the level of the last post, I took out the little metal things that have a little + sign in them from the back of the computer with a little metal stick that had a reversed + sign on it. Then I opened the door and located the compact disc player and pulled off the big gray cable from it. Then I took the extra connector thing that was on the cable that plugged into the little shiny thing that said Seagate and plugged it into the compact disc player. Then I noticed that the cable was bleeding on one side so I took it to the company nurse where she gave me a new one that only had dried blood on it. She told me to keep the bloody side next to the power connector to keep it warm. Then I called the janitor over with his plier things to make sure the plastic thing with the metal inside on the shiny Seagate thing was plugged into the slot that said "master with slave" whatever that means (the lunch lady told me to do that and she makes a mean tuna fish casserole so she probably knows). Then when I was putting the plus sign things back on with the plus sign thing inserter stick, I realized that my tie was stuck in the box so I yelled for help. To make a long story short, everything was back together and I have half a tie and water in my ear. Then when I turned my computer on, I couldn't get my Dress ME Up Barbie cd to work.
What else am I going to do on a snowy day?
Maybe I'll try to get my CD-ROM working?
I'm not going to justify that by a reply, and I'm done trying to help you. Please excuse me for trying to be clear in case you didn't know how to do that stuff. I don't think that that sarcastic reply was justified, and you can count on me not making an effort to help you anymore.
