change baseline shift for list characters

We have a list created in InDesign and can't seem to get the characters (the squares and/or dots) to line up center with the text. normally you would use the baseline shift to accomplish this but we can't select the text for the dots. how does one change the dots to vertically align with the text of the row.

 
...choose show options in the character palette flyout menu, baseline shift is the bottom left input field, i refer to CS2...

...a shortcut is press alt + shift and the arrow keys, this will move it in 2pt increments...

...the keyboard increment can also be adjusted in the preferences dialogue under units and increments...
