Hello,
I am re-posting this with some new info/symptoms. I am receiving an error that reads: "lexplore has caused an error in USER.EXE. lexplore will now close. If you continue to experience problems, try restarting your computer"(which doesnt work). It happens mostly after a log on with username and password(every time on yahoo page builder, ebay sell option, hotmail sometimes, etc.). It also randomly happens when a certain page or pop-up occurs and ?"something"? triggers it! I cant find out what that ?"something"? is!! I followed the previous advice and downloaded, updated and ran AVG anti virus and spybot. Both found some goodies to get rid of, I did but the problem still persists. I have nothing shady on the system that I can see. As of now, I am current on windows updates, if logged on another computer this does not happen. Any advice to fix this irritation pppplllleeeeaaaasssseee?? Thanks in advance!!!

Any info on when this started? You might try the internet explorer repair tool. Go to Add/Remove programs in the Control Panel, select Internet Explorer and hit remove. You'll find the repair option there. What version of IE are you using?

mattjurado,
Thanks for the reply. It started after a HARD crash that I didnt want to fix, re-wrote hard drive with many viruses, etc. I've never done it but, I am a little bit scared of removing my Internet explorer and then trying to repair it all in one shot. DONT WANT TO LOSE MY DATA! Is this safe?

Sorry, I forgot. It is THE most recent version of windows ME available to this date.

"It started after a HARD crash that I didnt want to fix, re-wrote hard drive with many viruses."

What does this mean? Did you reinstall windows but not format first?
And based on the fact you have had virus activity, this is likely part of the problem.

I highly suggest you just format and reload from scratch.

However, you are absolutely right. You should always have a backup of your data first. If you don't, I suggest doing that before anything else, even if you have to slave the hard drive off in another computer, and copy the data.

You won't lose your data by doing the Internet Explorer repair thing. Just go to Add/Remove programs, select Internet explorer, click the add/remove button, then select REPAIR internet explorer, then OK. You will have to restart, but after that it may well have fixed the problem.

It's worth a try before formatting and re-installing

Will I have to save anything before I do this? bookmarks, etc.?

NO. Your Favorites will still be there (Though I make it common practise to back up the Favorites folder regularly anyway as I'm always adding new bookmarks) Off the subject, I always keep a copy of my mail accounts too so as to avoid having to fill in all the details after reinstalling the OS.

I tried it and it didnt work, at least I learned something new. Guess Ill have to do it all over. Ugghh. Thanks for the help.

By the way, the reason I suggested to backup first, what if he had hit the repair option, and the machine rebooted to a blue screen. That would suck.

Matt J.

P.S. Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem. Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.

this iexplore error is an ongoing thing. at microsoft there are pages of message boards just on this very thing.
i have the same problem and have tryed everything myself so i know how frustrating it is.
i did a complete reformat of the hard drive and install of winme. and within 5 min i had the same error.
on the install when i stayed with iexplore v4 it seemed ok but some sites needed v5 or greater and as soon as i upgraded to v5+ it started again.
last week i went to v6 and it hasnt crashed yet.

I just updated as of today (version 6+) and the same thing happens. I just cant bring myself to redo it all if it wont help. This blows!

I have a similar issue on a PC running ME, I have not tried this, but I would try to remove IE 6 completely using the add/remove programs option and then download IE 55SP2 and install it and not upgrade to IE6 from that point. I would download ad aware 6.1 from and also download the latest reference file, it usually will find spyware that Spybot does not find.
