I am having trouble adding a tape drive to my E30, AIX v 4.1

Although the tape drive appears as defined/available with the lsdev -Cc tape, it will not respond to tar commands. I eventually deleted all refereces to the device (rmt0, rmt1 etc.) and deleted them from the permanent database as well ( no definition of them remaining) and ran configuration manager so the system would automatically pick up what it needs for the tape drive.

cfgmgr returns with the following error but defined rmt0, rmt1 and rmt2 anyway. I still cannot perform tape operations on the drive just as before.

Does anyone know whats' going on here ?

thanks very much, mitchy martell ( famous french race car driver)

What do you mean "defined/available"? Under AIX, those are 2 separate conditions. Defined = Yellow/Red light. Available = Green Light. (Racing terms).

Post the output of "lsdev -Cc adapter" and "lsdev -Cc tape".

Bill.

If it is defined you will never be able to run tar...it has to be available...

as bjversal said...lsdev -Cc adapter and lsdev -Cc tape...and lsdev -Cs scsi

What type of tape drive, what level of AIX...some of the tape drives required
4.1.5 plus apars.......................

OK - so far, so good. Run a tar command to the tape drive in question and post the screen output.

Bill.
