I need some advice on getting certified in Solaris or Unix. Would it be more advisable to self study (this is a problem as I don't have a SS or Unix box at home), use a website such as unixed.com or attend a class? I have a background in IT, but no experience with either of these operating systems.

HI,

It is a good idea to have your own machine with solaris as an OS. With solaris you can dual boot if you want to keep your existing OS. On top of that, browse through information. And if you have extra money, no harm to attend the class. Before taking any exam, make sure you are familiar with the OS. DO some sample question from sun website or any other site.

regards,
feroz

Note that the early sections of Admin 1 cover booting using the Open Boot Prom. This means if you want to practice you will need access to a Sparc machine.

You can pick older SPARC servers up very cheaply on e-bay. Something Like an Ultra 1 with 128Mb+ RAM, CDROM, 2.1Gb+ Hard Drive (two if you want to practice mirroring) onboard Ethernet and a basic Graphics card should be fine.

You will also need a Sun keyboard and mouse along with a Sun monitor or Sun to VGA adaptor (for PC screen) if you want to try out using the GUI - or set up a network to a PC and use an X-Windows Emulator

I agree, you should have an Intel version of the OS to pratice on at home. The section that deals with openboot is not very large, so using a good book ie Sun Certified System Administrator for Solaris 8 Study Guide (Sun Microsystems Press) should do just fine.

I also want to note that although self study and at home practice would be enough to pass the exams, I would have to agree with SUN and say that you should have at least 1 to 2 years expereance with the OS before taking the exams. Again, this could be a catch 22 if you need the cert. to get the job...

Good luck with the exams.
