I have started studying for the CCNA tests. I was looking at Cisco's site, and have this question. If you want to get CCIE, do you just take the written and lab exams for CCIE? Are there no prereqs like you have to be CCNA or CCNP? Can you become a CCNP without going through CCNA? Most other certs I have required completion of one level before starting the next. For example, I had to become a Novell CNA before I could continue with my CNE certs.

Correct on all counts. Actually, you don't need to be a CNA before a CNE, but these days it just happens. When I did the CNE it was separate and didn't apply to a CNA.

Anyway, the CCNA exam is relatively broad, while the CCNP tests seem to be somewhat narrower (but much broader when taken in total). The CCIE is a single written exame and lab with no prerequesites.

For as much as it costs to take the CCIE, I wouldn't put any prereqs on it either.. more chance of making money off of it that way.

Thanks to both of you for your speedy reply. And thanks for the link. Now, on to the binary math.

Since Novell 3.12 days you became a CNA before the CNE, the CNA just being the Admin course, the remaining course being the advanced admin, service and support et-al.

One thing with Cisco certifications is that you need to recertify with them every 3 years, that is for all of the exam tracks, not just the CCIE.

CCIE needs to recertify every two years by taking the current CCIE written. The lab is a one-time requirement. All other certs need to be renewed every three years.

However higher level certs always recitify lower levels, so once you have ccna, if you sit a CCNP exam and pass that renews your CCNA, and if you complete the CCIE written it renews professional level Certs.
I think nowadays its better to go up through CCNA - CCNP - CCIE, after CCNP you only need to top up your knowledge before going for the CCIE written
