Centillion 100, switchcode upgrade to 5.X ???

hi there,

after successfuly unlocking password on one of my the switches (using the method posted earlier on, amazingly it works !!!!) and finally getting a cable that works, i've discovered that switch1 is ver 3.2X (16Mb ram) and switch2 is 4.1X (26 Mb), both advanced ver. with QoS etc....

My question is:

while there are steps required to go from 2.X to 3.x and high chance of corrupting the flash ram, is 3.2/4.1 -> 5.X straight forward ???? Has anyone any thoughts/experiences with that ????
Can't really afford to ruin them....

Hi

You cannot upgrade more than one major release at a time, otherwise it corrupts the flash in the Centillion. That is to say that yo can go directly from 3.x to 4.x. To got from 3.x to 5.x you must load 4.x as an intermediate step.

If you use the Speedview tool that comes with the latest version it will handle the moving of code files via tftp, but do not use it to alter a config that has been created on a different software level.
That said, when the software upgrades are complete the latest level of Speedview can safely be used to convert a config written on an earlier version to be compatible with the latest code version.

I strongly recommend looking at the release notes for each major version upgrade as you do it.

Thankx for the advice on the 2 step upgrade, however i'm still unclear about one thing:

If I'm going to upgrade from 4.x to 5.x for example (ie. one step upgrade), what is the actual procedure ??

correct me if i'm wrong.

first i use the 4.1 speedview and save the config on harddrive in a safe dir. Should i first reset the switch to factory defaults and save the config ???

Then delete the 4.1 speedview and install 5.X. Load up TFTP utility and transfer 5.x switchcode to the C100, once that's done, reset switch. convert the old 4.X to 5.X config using speedview 5.X. finaly upload the new config to C100.

does that seem to be correct ???

From the documentation I have seen, each of the major releases past 3.x have the ability to upgrade previous versions to that level, ie, 4.2.x or 5.1.1. The first thing you need to do is "backup" the current config by exporting it. This way, if anything goes wrong, you can import the settings back in, which you'll do anyway before you shut the c100 down and reboot. So the scenario, as I understand it, is to run Speedview (say v4.2.2), export config, upgrade to 4.2.2, then import config so the settings get modified to "fit" the new version, then power off. When 30-60 seconds have passed, power up and hope it works. If successful, go to the next major revision and do it again.

Oops - see the new thread I started on "Lost...". Go to the ftp site and get the swcodes for the revisions you wish to use. I forgot to mention that very important detail. Also, make sure the code matches the Speedview in use. The code has to be readily available to the program (same directory) before it will work. Same instructions, just make sure the code is there or it will bail and may corrupt! Oh, and DO NOT make changes on, say, a 3.2.1 switch with Speedview v5.1.2 or you'll create a boat anchor!
