How do you center something on the canvas?

I mostly work in Illustrator, and there is a simple button you click to center to the artboard.
 
photoshop doesn't really have the same options but a quick way to do it is using the alignment controls in the options panel, these are available when the move tool is selected.
To align a layer to the center of the document:
Link that layer to the background and select the background layer
Click align center horizontal and vertical. The layer should jump into the center of the image.
 
If you are dragging in a new layer, hold the shift key down and drop the image anywhere on the target image. That will center it.
