When i use 'place' to insert an image in illustrator it automatically places the image in the center of the page.

However when i print the page the image isn't in the center. Can anyone think why this might be and how to center it properly for printing? I have made sure that page setup is set to A4 and not US letter (as im in England) but it still isn't right.

Thanks, this is important because im doing double sided printing and the images need to line up on the front and back of the page.

Or if anyone knows a better way of doing this in photoshop then id be very grateful.

First, make sure you can see the page tiling (View > Show Page Tiling). That will give you a dotted rectangle that corresponds to the printed page. The document artboard doesn't necessarily match your printer. In the toolbox there is a Page tool (usually hidden behind the Hand tool - click and hold to see it). Using this you can move the page tiling box around so the image is centered.

Of course, printers are often slightly off, so it might take a few adjustments to get it right.
