I have a series of cells that are all ACCOUNTING Formatted

A B C D
$43,622.43 $42,770.78 $851.65 $0.00
$20,089.53 $19,348.89 $740.64 $-
$23,465.76 $23,087.19 $378.57 $-
$29,706.87 $29,603.76 $103.11 $0.00
$27,269.31 $26,867.67 $401.64 $0.00

the formula in cell D1 is =A1-B1-C1 and the same for d2 - D5

When I change the format of D1 - d5 to general I get

$43,622.43 $42,770.78 $851.65 1.47793E-12
$20,089.53 $19,348.89 $740.64 0
$23,465.76 $23,087.19 $378.57 0
$29,706.87 $29,603.76 $103.11 5.82645E-13
$27,269.31 $26,867.67 $401.64 3.06954E-12

all data is typed in (not linked or copy/paste)
all cells formatted before data input

I am guessing this is somewhere in the FAQ but there is so much there not I am unable to find it . . . some guidance/help would be appreciated.

Many thanks

Welcome to the world of double precision calculations.
The numbes are stored as 64-bit floating-point numbers, whatever the formatting is. One will get a different result after changing the formula to =A1-(B1+C1).
The best you can do is to round the result: =ROUND(A1-B1-C1,2)

combo

Thanks . . . now the accounts can go through with HAPPY accountants

Cheers
