CE9 viewer options in J2EE

I'm new to Crystal and have been dumped into CE9 - so despite having read lots of documentation I'm a bit lost.

I have some reports on an APS server and can view them ok from that machine, and the init=java option gives me a nice applet-based viewer.

Now, on a separate J2EE web-server (not the same machine) I can write code that shows me the report in HTML, but I can't work out how to get the applet viewer option to work. Could someone please point me to some documentation or an example?
