CE8.5-can't veirfy nt domain

i can't seem to map nt domain accounts. I'm getting the following error:

"Error updating Windows NT authentication properties: The NT Authentication plugin failed to verify the domain: "XXXXXX". Please make sure this domain exists and is accessible. "

-has anyone come across this problem? any help is appreciated.
