We have a report written to print labels on a thermal printer (Cognitive Del Sol printer). The report on the local machine works great but, when saved to the server as a CE report; CE won't display the report in the viewer, only the error message that the report header/footer is too large. We're using CE 8.0/CR 8.5 and the printer is local; not network, BTW.

I've followed all the suggestions Crystal had to offer in all of their KBase articles to no avail. The printer drivers, report name, etc. are identical on both the server and the local PC and switching CE to ActiveX viewer didn't help.

Any suggestions?

The printer is local to both the development machine and the server? This means that you have 2 printers.

I'd suspect at minimum a driver difference, or perhaps the printer isn't the default on the server?

Thanks for the reply. The printer (only 1 involved) is local on the development machine and connected to LPT1. We installed the printer driver on both the local machine and the server where CE is installed. Running the report directly from the local machine from CR works fine. Accessing the report through CE gives the error. The printer isn't set as the default on the server but, even so, selecting the printer from CE still returns the same error. BTW, the report was written/saved with the printer settings for the printer. Printer set-up is identical on the local PC and server including label size and printer name.

Hope that clarifies it some.

Hmmm.

Since the printer isn't local, then that might be part of your problem.

When you use a different printer, Crystal will reformat the report for that printer.

Try setting the printer as the default printer on the CE server, does that resolve?

Thanks. I'll forward the info on (unfortunately, the site that's having this problem is hours away from where I am, so we've been troubleshooting over the phone) and have them give it a try. My experience w/CE is slim to none at this point - CR is slightly different story.

I will say this much; this forum has been more help to me in just a few months time w/various issues than Crystal Support ever has been. Whether your suggestion works or not, I'm giving you a star just responding so quickly.

Hi sv,

Just got word back from our site that setting the printer as default on the server didn't work either. Strange.

They've installed/re-installed both CE and the printer drivers onto the server multiple times, set the ActiveX, etc. and nothing works. If the printer (and report) are on a local machine w/CR 8.5; it works fine. Having the printer on a local machine (w/o CR8.5) and accessing the report thru CE won't work (gives the error above). We're getting ready to upgrade to CR/CE 9.0. Hopefully that will solve the problem. Thanks for your time.
