I have started experimenting with CE8 (I am using Crystal Reports 8.5) as a means to distribute reports to users within our facility. I have no problems pulling up reports by navigating through the Crystal Management Console. I am accessing Crystal Launchpad/Management Console via Internet Explorer.

Problem:
When people print reports, the reports print with their computer's default printer settings (as would be expected when printing out of IE). This is a problem because usually these reports are not designed to fit within their standard print settings -- the reports are often designed with landscape orientation and have smaller margins than standard.

I don't want user's to be required to change their print settings every time they print a report. Is their some way around this in CE? Maybe some way to open these reports with their print settings intact?? Maybe some interface, which is more effective than IE for printing these reports??

Thanks

Hi,
Be sure they are printing from the Report's printer icon, not the IE toolbar one.
Also, for IE users, having the reports use the ActiveX viewer provides better printing options then the DHTML one ( the Java viewer, with Netscape, works well, as well) - printing is a client function, so the user will have control over what and how it is printed.

Thanks. Perhaps we were printing from the IE toolbar icon rather than the Report's printer icon.

What ActiveX viewer are you referring to? I saw a Netscape ActiveX plugin (npviewer.exe) on the CE CD, but is there a separate ActiveX viewer for IE?

Hi,
ActiveX is the 'standard' viewer for IE ( but you may need to specify it, depending on how the report is being called).
Usually when an IE user first attempts to view a CE report assuming no explicit (i.e. &init=<someviewer>) is given, the ActiveX viewer will attempt to be installed..If already there, it will be used..

How are the reports being called? ( custom csp, asp, ePortfolio?)

I am accessing it by opening CE Launchpad via IE, then I access the link to Crystal Management Console where I can view the reports as they are stored in user folders.

Right now however, I aparently need to reboot the server that is running CE services. I can open Launchpad, but when I try to link to the Crystal Management Console or ePorfolio, I get an "HTTP - 500 error". I checked the event viewer, which had the following error message:

The server failed to load application '/LM/W3SVC/1/ROOT'. The error was 'General access denied error'.

I received this error last week, but it was resolved after a server reboot.
I have already stopped and started all of the services directly attributed to Crystal to no avail. Since we are not using CE extensively yet and this isn't urgent, I am waiting until people leave work today -- then I'll reboot the server again. Eventually, I'll have to work through this problem too because I can't have CE losing availability all the time.

Anyway, I after the reboot, I expect to be able to access the reports again and then I will try your initial suggestions, which I expect will work well.

Thanks
