Does anyone no the solution to this..........after undertaking a Panther installation on an iMac, CDs and DVDs won't mount on the desktop, they are merely ejected.
I fell in to the trap of simply putting in the Panther CD and starting up, this completley paralysed the machine (display etc.)as the firmware was too old.
Fortunately I had a second drive with 9.2.2 on it.
I booted from this and despite the bad display was able to updtae the firmware to 4.1.9f.
I then undertook a Panther install (from the CDs) all the way through to 10.3.9
It's only then I noticed the problem with the CD/DVD drive-
Try creating a new user account, then log in as that new user and see if your CDs mount then. If so, you should be able to log in as your origional account and thing should work fine. This solved a CD mounting problem I had, but on a much newer machine. Worth a try, eh?
I've just undertaken the suggestion, but to no avail, it simply refuses certain media, even afterwards.
If I insert a standard CD like Norton,Quark 6 etc. it mounts, despite it taking a while.
The behaviour is exactly the same under 9.
I can therefore only draw the conclusuion that the device is faulty. After all the strange behaviour prompted me to install Apple's 1.0 DVD update for this type of iMac.
