I have a older 400mhz computer with a CDRW (Lite-on 12x10x32). I cannot get the drive to run in DMA...only mode 4. If I check DMA under the drived properties, the computer will lock-up every time I try to burn a disk with Roxio. It used to work before (my friend) flash the mother board to enable it to reconize my 40gb hard drive. I've tried everything I know to do which isn't a lot. I'm not sure axactly when it started not working right. I have wireless internet and I can't remember for sure if it quit wroking when the MB was flashed or the Wireless was installed?!?!
I can't burn 12x in (mode 4) without constant re-buffer of the CDRW. It's faster to just burn 8x because of no underrun. I know there is a way to fix this because it worked just fine before.....I just can't figure out what caused it for sure.

Does the DMA remain checked when you check it or is it unchecked after the re-start? "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing....." [morning]

It stays. The burn starts perfect but about 10% into the burn the computer locks up. I have used Nero a couple of times (hate it) and it DID burn 12x with DMA on but it had to use the Buffer underrun a few times!?! I can't figure out why one program will work and one locks up. I have Roxio Easy CD creator 5.02 which I love, but if I can't use it....them so be it.

What kind of setup are you running (hardware, software, OS, etc...)? Is the hard drive at least 5400RPM? Are you copying from another CD or from your hard drive?

If you're doing a CD-to-CD copy, then the problem might be the other CDROM, or the fact that they're both on the same IDE channel. Same goes with the hard drive... [deejay]
