Dell Latitude D620 Laptop running WXP SP3, CDRW/DVD drive WILL play audio CD's and DVD video's, HOWEVER, it will not read data CD's. Have tested with multiple data CD's and were able to read the data CD's in at least 2 other workstations. The CDRW/DVD drive is "TSST TS-L462D 24x Slim CDRW/DVD". The latest firmware has been installed. Have already uninstalled/reinstalled the drive. And it did work at one time until about 2 months ago. No hardware or software has been changed. When the data CD is inserted, and double-click on the drive a blank window appears as if there is no disk in the drive. Any thoughts or ideas?

it's possible that the upper and lower filters got scrambled...

to test this possibility, do the following:

START, RUN, type in Regedit...
search for the following KEY and delete it:

"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}"

Without the quotes of course...

If you can't delete it, then you might have to give yourself access by right clicking (on the leftside) and set your access rights first...

then exit RegEdit and go to the Devicemanager and uninstall all CD-ROM's, DVD's, and CD-RW's...

REBOOT...

and let windows reinstall the drives...

then test again with a known working CD...

Keep us posted...

I was hoping that would work BadBigBen. Unfortunately it did not. We even tried 2 different CD/DVD drives.

Just curious, have you tried on a different user on the same machine?

Dr.B0b, we just tried a different user and unfortunately that did not resolve the problem either. For a moment, I thought you might have been onto something. Thank you for your efforts and input.

what burn software is installed on that PC? or filter programs, e.g. AnyDVD, or even CD rippers...

I am thinking that if 2 different CD/DVD drives as well as two different users, then it probably is a software issue along the above lines...

perhaps de-installing that app and rebooting, then running CCleaner to get rid of junk, will get that to recognize the CDs again...

now you could do another test and use a Linux Live CD such as Ubuntu and see if it has problems reading from data CD's, if so then it is a strange hardware issue...

You might also try updating the ROM software. I've had that problem before and the solution was a ROM update.

David.
