I have a Dell 4100 with Adaptec CD software which has a CDRW and a CDROM-DVD. The DCROM-DVD will no longer read CDs that I have burned. It use to do this just fine, now the light blinks but it never seems to find the CD and while it's doing this the computer becomes brain dead. Some times it will give up and give me back the computer but mainly I have to reboot. Both drives have also developed a problem with ejecting CDs. this also sometimes requires a reboot to get the CD ejected. I have tried the burned CD on other drives and it works fine. Any help would be appreciated

EIDE I'm guessing. I'm at work and the computer is at home but I'm quite sure it's not SCSI.

EIDE for sure! I'm home now. I have an LG CDRW CED-80808 and a SANSUNG DVD-ROM SD-612 The software is Adaptec Easy CD Creator 4.02d_d5 and Adaptec DirectCD 3.01d_d5, Dell version 6.0.

Im out on a limb here, but Ive had horrible problems using the adaptec software and now use a combo of Nero 5 and cdrwin.

Try removing the software. (well get to hardware if this doesn't work)

B-)

(if it was scsi, i thought it might have been the scsi controller card, but its not so why am I even...anyway)

I had this problem once before.I found out that power cable connection was lose and I couldn't get it to seat snuggly , which my CDROM would spin up and down and never spin up enough to read the the CD. Soon as tryed a different CDROM in it place with snug connector it worked fine. You might check this!

I have had great results with Adaptec (Roxio) software once I downloaded all the updates. With Direct CD you have to eject the CD with Direct CD itself. Pushing the eject button after you have written on the disk usually won't work. You have to do it with Direct CD. Sounds like you have a bigger problem since BOTH drives won't eject, though.
I would do an Un-install on the Adaptec software, restart the computer, re-install and install all updates from the Roxio web site against your version of the software.

I have a Digital Research cdrw and a compaq presario pentm. 3 and I cant get it to pick up my cdrw. I think is has something to do with the drivers. Its not showing I have a cdrw get error message in nero to securn the connection. Do you know what drivers to download. Nero software is not showing it is installed.
Thanks

I haven't had time to do much about the CD problem but I have downloaded and installed the available updates for my software and in in last couple of days have successfully created some data CDs. This seems to work OK, I burned 3 CDs and they ejected fine and work just fine in the DVDCD also. Just a few minutes ago I put one of the troublesome CDs in the CDRW, I could see and run the files, they are mpeg video files, fine but the CD wouldn't eject. It took a reboot to get it loose. I have copied the videos to my hard drive and instead of using DirectCD I'll use Easy CD Creator and see if that works. If It does I'll go that route to backup my files and keep window shopping for better software and a faster burner. Thanks for all the help and advice.

You have to eject using Direct CD. It won't let you just hit the eject button because Direct CD writes some info on the disk before it will let you eject.

I tried again, This time I started getting a message about "Roxio DirectCD Kernel" that I had never seen before, and found out that once "Roxio DirectCD Kernel" had control of the operation it wouldn't let go. The eject CD screen wouldn't come up, ScanDisc would not work because the CD was "currently being used by Roxio DirectCD Kernel Diagnostics can not be started" So once more I uninstalled and reinstalled DirectCD and guess what? it works! I even put in one of the old CDs and even it ejects! I should live so long as to figure why what worked today didn't work before. I don't why it took the computer so long to show me the "Roxio Directcd Kernel" message.
