I got a friends computer to put a modem in and find that the Cyber Drive won't work with Win XP. Is there an inexpensive unit that will work with XP? This one was only $40.

HI
I dont think it is the barnd name which is not working with XP. That CD drive must have been faulty or very very old.

I suggest, if you replace.. then.. replace it with DVD since, DVDs read at compatible speed in normal CDs .. say 48X while only DVDs are read at 16x or 24x .. hwatever you choose. SO you will get the benefit of both worlds.

Before doing.. check the power cable & IDE cable connecting the CD and the CASE/Motherboard. May be that is loose.

Also when you do that .. ensure that the CPU cooler is secure and is doing its function. If the CPU gets hot.. CD reading will fail.

ramani, It's the modem that won't work. I have since decided that it might be well to load win98 in a separate drive and install the modem there as well. Will that work?

Is there a yellow exclamation mark in device manager on PCI simple communications controller? If so this is needed to install the modem. You would then reinstall drivers for the PCI device and point to the modem drivers. If the drivers are good for W2K it will then automatically find and install the modem.
