I get a "device is not ready" error message when trying to access my cdrom, BIOS detects the cdrom but for some reason windows does not. Any help greately appreciated!

On the odd occasion the CDROM does read strange?

I take it you're getting this message in DOS...? It suggests the device might have a fault, or you're using the wrong driver, or there's a ribbon cable fault. Replace the ribbon cable, and check that the correct device driver is being loaded in the CONFIG.SYS file. You should also have MSCDEX.EXE loaded in AUTOEXEC.BAT.

If U R brave and a little handy the optical eye can be cleaned by dismanling the drive and using a glasses cloth very lightly on the optics, takes about 30mins, you will of course have to remove the drive but it could well save U the price of a replacement!! Martin
