hi i have dell system with a lite cd rom
the drive operates but i do not see the cd rom drive in explorer. I have looked in device manager and cannot see cd rom under devices installed i am running win98
it is a master on ide cable 2 and auto detect in bios
thanks

Does the BIOS recognize the drive? Is the second IDE slot enabled? You may also want to check power and replace the drive cable.

Hope this gives you some ideas.

You could try disconnecting power and data cables from the drive.
boot the machine, go to device manager uninstall cd drive.
shut machine down.
reconnect drive
boot machine and let it find and reinstall drive.

If drive was installed and had been working, did you install or uninstall any software around the time it stopped working?

Hi debaglee, I had similar experiences during my Job, and I can make U some suggestions , first that all, U should try going to Control Panel/system and check if you got installed under HDD controller two kind of controller one from Intel (something like this: Intel 82xxx PCI Bus Master controller (depends of your M/B) and second the double FIFO IDE primary controller, if one of these is missing them I´ll suggest you Try to reinstall windows.
But if the CD-ROM is a 52X from Acer them you have a big chance to have electronically broken your CD Drive. Even when Bios is detected it, it will fails few second after booting and then windows can controls it. If so try another CD-ROM just to check and see what happens.

hi
i unistalled it and turned the pc off
i then booted up the pc then ater shut it down, i re-connected the cd rom and booted up.
i did not get any new hardware detection windows, however when i look in device manager the cdrom section was there
then i rebooted the pc and re-checked the devcie manager and found the cdrom had gone back under the heading disk disks
any suggestions
please

hi i tried a different cd rom drive and it was accepted i belive this indicates that the unit is faulty
can you please tell me why the cd roms appear under scsi heading in regedit

All right!!! Is your Dell systems an Optiplex Desktop System or a Precision Workstation? Cause, in both cases they use SCSI drivers even for the CD-Rom and the HDD that’s why, CD-Rom appears under SCSI devices.
