Do they both rely on the default SMTP site to be up and running in order to work? I can't get either of them to start, and I think its because the default SMTP won't start due to the fact something (firewall probably) has a stranglehold over port 25 traffic. I tried persits as an alternative, but if it relies on the SMTP site being up, I'm wasting my time.

Any ideas would be appreciated!

No, it does not rely on an SMTP server being up. In fact, last week, we had to move servers, and I could not get CDONTS to work to save my life, so I just installed PERSITS, reconfigured all email scripts (that was fun), and everything worked just fine, albeit a bit slower.

The magic is being able to specify your .host -- which you can specify for whatever you need -- as long as your server has permissions to send mail on that server.
