hi, i have a major problem. i was using nero to copy a cd, it reached 100% but did not come up with the usual msg saying it had completed so i left it for a few more minutes when i realised it had frozen. so i closed using ctrl+alt+del and rebooted. noticed that both my optical drives which r on secondary master and secondary slave not being detected by the bios. so i rebooted again to go into bios and went to the "boot" menu when it had only 1 option, ATAPI cd-rom, went to it and bios froze. i am using windows xp professional, cd writer is a teac w512b i think, and i think dvd is a pioneer dvd 116. also cd writer does not open at all but dvd drive does which seems odd. been using nero and the drives for copying for a year and only just arsed up. ne more information that may b needed just ask and ill c wot i can find. thanks

The fact that the writer will not open and them not being detected in the BIOS makes me think it is hardware, possibly the burner has died. Disconnect the ROMs one at a time and see what happens. If this does not help try them on the other IDE channel one at a time as slaves, you may have to reset jumpers for the one which is now a master. All things are possible except skiing through a revolving door.
