Hello... this is a great site with lots of helpfull advice. My problem is that I have a 32x10x40 burner that will read and then it acts like it is going to start to write but then it locks up my system... is this a software problem or is it my burner? Thanks in advance.

you could try uninstalling and reinstalling your software, and maybe an cdrom drive cleaner, if that doesnt work then it maybe time for a new burner

Does the "system lockup" clear after a while? or do you have to re-boot? Sometimes a buffer underrun error will "appear" to lock up the system. You might try burning at a slower speed to check the buffer underrun.

AS buckeye said, reinstalling may take care of it as well. Good luck, and Happy Computing

thanks to all... I have reinstalled the software serval times. I have also deleted the drive and reinstalled that. To let you know more of what I mean, it locks up until I take the disk out and then it is fine. No errors appear or anything. I have tried writing at a lower speed and it still freezes until I take the disk out. Any advice would be appreciated... thanks again

Bad drive assuming you have tried multiple disks. I had one that would keep my machine from booting if the door wasn't opened during boot. It is possible a good cleaning would take care of it as well. A dirty laser lens could make the drive appear to be bad. Good luck, and Happy Computing

Sorry guys, but the worst advice you can give someone is that the problem is a BAD DRIVE. You have to explore all options before you assume that. 99 times out of a 100 it's not the drive.

Millieboppers,

There are a few things you should check first. Is the CD-RW drive on its own IDE channel, or is it sharing it with another device? If so, then arrange it so that it's on the secondary IDE by itself (just as a test).

Also, you can check to see if the drive is using DMA. Most CD-RW drives should be using it. How to check depends on your version of Windows and the make/model of your motherboard.

My guess is that it's NOT the software and probably has to do with a Windows or hardware configuration. However, it doesn't hurt to make sure you're on the latest version. Be sure to visit the software's website (Roxio or Nero) for all the latest updates.
