I would like to add a CD-rw to my sparc 5 running Solaris 8. Has anyone had experience with CDR and adding them into the configuration. I am looking to use this as a back up device . Any suggestions on makes or models would be appreciated.

Thanks,

cdrw under sparc works great ...

we've got an HP external SCSI drive, just a reconfigure and the thing is in there

you have to be root to use the thing (so we've found) and have to have turned of volume management ... '/etc/init.d/volmgt stop'

then just 'cdrw -l'

as long as you only have one cdr device it will find it, else you will have to specify the device, but it's one of the easiest tools i've come across in a long time :)

you will probably have to use makeisofs to store the file system (there is a way of using pipes/etc in the man pages of cdrw) ... but the command i use (for cross platform stuff) stores the image file in a directory:

mkisofs -d -L -J -r -v -V <volume name> -o <output file>

if you want to save the original users and permissions then '-r' should be '-R'
