I have a Plexwriter 12/10/32A CD-RW drive running under XP Pro, that has been working until recently. Now the system shows it as a recordable device until you insert a burnable cd-r. Then the system shows it as a cd-rom. ake the disc out and it changes back to a CD-RW device.

You could unhook the drive from your system and boot up without it, then hook it back up and boot up again, that might do it. If not, do the same thing i mentioned but also uninstall your burning software, re-install the drive, then re-install the burning software.
Also, if you have a friend who will let your try the drive in his system, that might help you find out if the problem is within the drive itself.

Thanks for the ideas garebo, but after trying it several times as you said, it still does not want to burn disks. It works as a regular cd rom though.

Unfortunately, it could very well be that the laser for burning has malfunctioned or simply died on you and only the laser for reading is working.
Any chance you could try another burner and see if it works ok or try your burner in another computer?
Plextor is such a good name too!
