In my /etc/fstab file, my HP cd-rw is being mounted exactly like my regular cdrom drive, read only and using the same block file in /dev. I'm kind of a newbie in Linux, how would I configure my cd burner to work right?
Thanks for any help!!

Work right in what sense?

You would NOT mount a CD to burn it, so is that your confusion?
