CD-RW can't spin disc?

Can anyone explain why a perfectly good CD-RW would suddenly not be able to spin a disc after inserting it? It tries to start the disc spinning, makes a few rotations, then stops and tries again. This goes on 9 times, each time, and then it gives up.

It's an external BusLink RW40E. I've had this for a year now, and this started 2 days ago. Tech support said a bad laser. And this happens regardless of it being connected to the PC.

I hope someone can instruct me on how to fix this thing.

thanks!

You didn't mention whether you were inserting a disk that can be read in another drive.
If you are, then it does sound as if there is a hardware problem.

Oh yes, any CD inserted that fails, works perfectly fine on the other CD-Rom.

I've given up. I broke down and bought a DVD writer.
