I custom built a computer with a Yamaha CR1FE 44x24x44 with 8MB Buffer CD-RW and a Samsung 52X cd rom drive. When burning with Nero Software I could get burn speeds normally at 40x (CD to CD on the fly). The Yamaha drive started going bad so I purchased a Plextor 52/32/52A with the 2MB Buffer. Now I have to use Roxio Easy CD Creator 5 and my actual burn speed says anywhere from 10x to about 25x at the highest (CD to CD on the fly). The only thing that changed between the two burners is a) the buffer size and b)the burning software (Nothing else has been added including software). For some reason I cannot get the same actual burn speeds as I previously had with the yamaha even though it is rated slower than the plextor.

I had the yamaha configured like this:
Primary IDE Western Digital HD
Secondary IDE Yamaha CD-RW (Master)/Samsung 52x CDROM (Slave) **Worked Great!!

I configured the Plextor and Samsung the same way as well as
Primary IDE Western Digital HD/Samsung 52x CDROM (Slave)
Secondary IDE Plextor CD-RW (Master) *Way slower

I have also made sure I am using Plexor recommended media. Please if you know a lot about optimizing burn speeds reply. I would like to know what is causing the problem. Is it the buffer size? Roxio? The way the drives are configured on the motherboard. I am thinking it is the buffer size, and am also thinking of just buying the Plextor Premium with the 8MB buffer and hooking it up with the Plextor 52/32/52A, but how should I configure them on the motherboard to maximize burn times. Thanks in Advance.

Why aren't you using NERO still. It is far better than roxio.
Was your version of Nero locked only for use with your Yamaha drive?
Version 6 of Nero is out now & it is great. I have never had any problems with Nero burning at the fastest speed available. Are your CD's OK for burning at higher speeds than 25x. It could always be the disc's causing your problems.

Yes I got the recommended Plextor CD-R's which can burn at 40x to 48x. Like I said I think its the buffer or maybe its the crappy Roxio Software!
