I have a 52X CD-ROM. Though it's recognized by Windows 2000 at system boot-up, and I'm able to eject and insert a CD when I'm in Windows, the OS does not seem to recognize that there's a CD inside.

When I insert a CD the CD-ROM's LED flashes as if reading from the CD-ROM but then suddenly it stops, and the CD-ROM icon in My Computer indicates that there's no CD in the drive.

Could anyone please help me out? Many thanks.

Either the drive has expired - which can be tested by booting to real-mode DOS and reading a CD-ROM - or the cable may have come loose.

Good Luck!

Check your cable - you may have a bad cable.

Win2K works just fine with these 52x cdroms.

Of course yours may be bad...

Reading non-copy-protected stuff to start is recommended. start with an audio CD, work your way to some older CD you have still laying around, then go for the newer ones.
