I was going to upgrade my Redhat distribution from 6.0 to 6.1, I put in the boot-floppy and when it goes to access the CD-Rom the light comes on for about 1.5 seconds and then goes out, my install/upgrade just hangs. Usually after it accesses the CD a gui box pops up asking whether I'm installing or upgrading, I don't even get that far. I tested by booting up my RH6.0 burned CD and it comes up just fine. The 6.1 disk worked fine just last week on another machine, so I can't tell if it's the CD or the CD-rom. I'm suspecting the CD though. Any ideas?
Jon Zimmer
b0rg@pcgeek.net
<a href= Aetea Information Technology
The software required `Windows 95 or better', so I installed Linux.
I have run into this type of problem before where a cd-r would work in one cd-rom and not another. I am pretty sure that it may be the color of the media and the age of the cd drive that you are attempting to read the cd in. If the burnt disc works fine in any other drive then the disc is not at fault. My advice, burn it on a different colored media (I find gold works best, but that is my opinion!) and try that. If that works for you then give the other cd that won't work to a friend or co-worker...

Good luck...
Troy Williams B.Eng.
fenris@hotmail.com

Your burn might be the problem. What CD format did you use to burn the CD? With my win98 system I can burn in various types, mainly Juliet and iso9660 types. I find that the Juliet isn't always readable by other operating systems. I don't know if it is a problem with Linux, but with some versions of windows and dos, the Juliet format doesn't always read. In your case, I think the Juliet format will work best since it uses long filenames. I had trouble with downloading Red Hat 6.1 before. I found a friend who had a full copy of it and burning a copy of that. Also, if you are able to download the whole cd off the net at a reasonable rate, I find it just as easy to make a net boot floppy and install from an ftp site. Find a university ftp site that's close to you and download the bootnet.img and install the system from that site. I installed my 6.2 system from ftp in less than an hour for a 500mb install.
