On this PC I am working on the CD-Rom is unusable. I inserted a known good CD drive and the same thing. When I click on the drive it tells me that it is unavailable.

I've checked all the basics. Cable connected. power to the unit.

On bootup the PC actually differentiates between the two types of CD-Rom drives and installs the correct drivers for them but they are not able to be used.

I am using Windows 98. Thanks for any help.

Have you checked the jumper settings on the drive?
Try putting it on the other IDE on the motherboard and see if you can get it to go.
Check your BIOS settings to make sure there isnt something set wrong there as well.

The more I learn,I realize how much more there is to know!

So it was working? and now it doesn't?
You could try a head cleaner but it does sound like you need a replacement.
CDroms are cheap £19 UK and are only designed to last 2-3years. Martin Replying helps further our knowledge, without comment leaves us wondering.

Checked the bios and the jumper setting.

It's not a head problem and a new drive will do nothing. That's why I took the burner out of my other PC to test it out. The burner works in my PC but not in this one. It's something wrong with the PC and/or hardware itself. What throws me off though is that on bootup it recognizes the type of drive depending on which one I put in. I.E. when I put the burner in it tells me that it's an HP Burner plus 8100 and installs a driver for that drive.
